Are You Visible Or Invisible?

Can I trust you?  Who are you?  Where are you?  Who do you work for?  Where can I find out more about your product or service?  These are questions we are all asking!

And I’m asking you….”How do you answer these questions?”  How do you establish credibility and verify your identity?   This man is asking those questions:

I choose to be visible!  I believe people have come to expect transparency and visibility.  If you are invisible, then as far as they are concerned, you don’t exist!

Has privacy ceased to exist?  Of course not!  But the reality is that nearly everything we do is tracked, sold, used for marketing, or searched for by consumers.  People want to read our reviews, see what we like, share in what we know and do 24/7.

I’m reading Daniel Pink’s book “To Sell is Human.”   It’s a good read….I highly recommend it:bookcoverjpeg-e1354078407704I agree with his premise that we are all selling something!  And I believe that being a good salesperson means being visible!   So what will you choose?

Debbie Weaver, star of the hit ABC show The Neighbors, made a profound statement in a recent episode.  She said,  “We can’t change what we are on the outside….we can only change who we are on the inside.”

It seemed like a great life lesson, and important to remember at home and at work.    So the thought for today is this:  “When people look at you, do they see the what or the who?  What can you do today to change that perception?

I’m smiling as I share this thought with you today!   By Tom Burns,  Seller of things essential to life as we know it….

You’re A Hero When It Works…

Unfortunately, most of us have a one-sided view of the world….ours!  It’s one of my pet peeves!

But more on that another time.  For now, we’re talking about business.  To a degree, it’s related to our one-sided viewpoint.  We celebrate success, but make fun of failure.  For every one that goes out on a limb, tries something radically new and different, there are a thousand who try and fail.  The reason many stop trying is the fear of ridicule.  How unfortunate that we don’t equally celebrate failure as one more step in the direction of success.  It’s much like the work of a scientist….multitudes of trials, experiments, hypotheses and tests….sometimes a lifetime of study hoping for a breakthrough. But the scientist does not stop when an experiment fails to prove the hypothesis!  It’s on to the next trial.

And so it should be in business.  Everyone loves a victory, But don’t forget about all of the hard workers out there trying something new every day!

Here is a good way to think about it.  A computer “speaks” in ones and zeros.  One=on and Zero=off. We think of things as “working” when they are on, and “not working” when they are off.  But a computer strings many ones and zeros together to operate.  Equating this to business, we might say success=on and failure=off, but when we put many of these together, we form the “code for success.”  Both are necessary!

So I challenge you to go out on a limb…..imagine what could happen if….and just do it!  …and if that fails, do it again!  What will you try today?

  • Persistence is the key to invention
  • Persistence leads to success
  • Persistence will find a way
  • Persistence finds a light in the dark
  • Persistence says yes when others say no
  • Persistence struggles to learn something new
  • Persistence builds when others tear down
  • Persistence rejects sarcasm, criticism, and negativity
  • Persistence has a vision…sees the path…and reaches for the goal

Splat! …An Allegory.

There you go…your project made an ugly mess on the floor!  (The visual is so good you can almost hear it go… splat!)  What do you do next?  You might be discouraged, but there are options.

For one thing, you have discovered one more way to fail.  You don’t have to do that again!

But wait….who said it’s an ugly mess?  Maybe you just need to add more colors, or connect the dots, or find another splat to join you!  Maybe you need to let it dry, and hang it on the wall for about a year….the change of perspective might give you new ideas!

Maybe you need a bigger paint brush, and a bigger canvas, and invite more people to paint with you!

Won’t those nay-sayers be surprised when you succeed!

Now go on and make a jolly good mess!

Just One Thing

Today was my day off, but I made a New Year’s Resolution to write my blog every day in 2013.

As I was thinking about my blog topic for today, it occurred to me that if we do “just one thing” daily to improve our life, our business, or our relationships, the cumulative effect will be awesome.

On the other hand, I look around at others and see them “wishing” they could ______ (fill in the blank).  At the end of 2013 they will still be “wishing” when they could be “doing” if only they would start with “just one thing.”

It may be just me, but if I can’t look back on the day and say, “I accomplished…._____” (fill in the blank)…then I feel very frustrated.  If a task is very large or complex, it can be broken down into multiple steps.  The accomplishment of just one step will move you forward to success.

Although I had many tasks on my list for today, I can say I did accomplish one very important task–

I posted this blog!

Will you commit to “Just One Thing” today?  Post a comment about how those small steps have moved you forward.

To your Success!

Waiting is NOT a solution!  It is a delay, an excuse, an unrecognized anxiety, a defense mechanism….call it what you will, it does nothing for your career, your happiness, or those New Year’s Resolutions you just made!

“I’m too tired…I’ll do it tomorrow.”  “I don’t know how to do that so I’ll wait until I have time to research it.”  “I can’t afford it right now….guess I’ll have to wait.”   Add your excuse here:__________________

(And I’m saying to myself at the end of this post…”I can’t write this blog, no one will read it.”
“Why am I writing this…will it help anyone?” and I am inserting these lines as an edit”  See–I have the same doubts, fears, and anxiety….I would prefer to wait for a better blog topic!)

I think that many of you reading this post have dreams, goals, or business plans that are hidden deep inside, safe from ridicule or failure.  It’s time to dust them off, share them with someone, and take the first small steps toward your goal.

I think it’s unfortunate that we live in an “instant satisfaction” society.  We have become accustomed to fast food, high speed internet, movies on demand…..everything faster and faster.  Now that you have decided to stop waiting, don’t be discouraged that success is not delivered via a drive-thru window!

DO THE WORK!  One small step at a time.  Accept frustration and failure….it proves you are working and learning.  When you can say with confidence, “well, that didn’t work!” you are one step closer to saying, “finally, I found the solution!”

Go on….get started right now!
