Searching for Kitchen Ideas

Where do you go for ideas to create the perfect kitchen?  Do you find Pinterest helpful?  How about Houzz?  Do you search specific brand websites, or do you search for local dealers where you can see and touch the products?  Do you ask your friends or find ideas in magazines?

Once you have the perfect kitchen in mind, how do you proceed to create it?  Do you hire an interior designer or an architect.  Do you want to work with a general contractor or do you search for a local remodeling company?

What advice do you value the most?  Do you search Consumer Reports or go shopping and hope for good advice from local dealers?

How do you put it all together?  Does a tabbed binder help?  So many decisions…..wall color, flooring, window treatments, countertop material and color, cabinet styles and hardware, lighting, backsplash, appliances and plumbing, an island with seating or a prep area, ventilation, and on and on….

Has designing your kitchen been a great experience or a total disaster?  What advice can you share that might help others design the perfect kitchen?

My name is Tom Burns, Sales Professional at A-1 Appliance in Nashville, TN.tom  I work with one critical component of the kitchen design process….the appliances.  Someone called me today and asked when they should order the appliances and should they be installed before the countertops or after….I could sense that they were paralyzed by the logistics of it all.  To simplify it, my answer was that the appliances are the first decision and the last installation.

Everything hinges on the appliance selection!  The architect can’t draw the kitchen without this decision.  The cabinets can’t be designed and built until dimensions are determined.  Will the range be the focal point of the kitchen, or is it important to integrate the appliances into the cabinetry to make everything look like furniture?  When everything is complete….the painting is finished, the cabinets and countertops have been installed, and the plumber and electrician have finished their work, it’s time for the final touch….the appliance installation!

Your masterpiece is almost complete.  But have you selected a dealer with an expert delivery and installation team?  Can they install everything without damaging your new floor?

Yes!  It can be done!  When you think of appliances in the Greater Nashville area, think of A-1 Appliance.a1logo(1)  A great starting point in your research should be our website, www.a1appliance.com.  You can also find a huge database of ideas on our blog, www.a1applianceideas.com.  And when you are ready to see the appliances in person, we invite you to visit our showroom. phone1 (1)A-1 Appliance offers products in all price ranges, styles, and colors.  Come on in and let me help  you sort through all of the choices!

Shopping for Kitchen Appliances

For most people, buying a new kitchen appliance or a washer/dryer is not a frequent experience.  It’s not like choosing a restaurant for lunch today.  A lot is at stake here….You need to feel confident that you can find a good selection of product, that the company is reputable, and that the staff is qualified to meet your needs.  In my humble opinion, A-1 Appliance is your best choice!  (Disclaimer: I have been a member of the sales staff at A-1 Appliance for over 15 years) 🙂tom

We have an incredible selection of appliances in all categories!  You may find inspiration in the Wolf/SubZero Living Kitchen, or in our live Jenn-Air kitchen.

For more ideas, venture upstairs to our Bosch/Thermador gallery, or to our Electrolux kitchen.  On any given day, you may find us baking cookies in our Miele kitchen….yummy, it sure smells good at A-1 Appliance!

Do you need to learn about magnetic induction cooking?  I can show you how with a quick demo!  I love to boil ice….yes, I said ICE.  I put a scoop of ice in the pan, and within 90 seconds I have boiling water!

Speaking of ice, did you know there is “good ice” and “bad ice”?  Watch this demonstration and tell me which one you prefer!

Not only does A-1 Appliance have a great showroom, we also have an in-house service department.  Do you need to talk with a service technician?  We can do that!  We have our own delivery and installation team.  You may have a very complicated installation issue.  If you need on site assistance in the planning stage…we can do that!  WOW….A-1 Appliance has a great sales staff too.  We offer an educational experience at A-1….we create APPLIANCE HAPPINESS!phone1 (1)

A “Cool” Kitchen

When you think of your kitchen, what is your first thought?  (That’s a rhetorical question….)

The point I’m making is that your first thought is probably not about the ventilation…..but it should be!

Over 75 years ago, someone did think about it, and invented the range hood that is commonly used today.  That company was Vent-A-Hood.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=HpqD1yjI6HA

Corporate History

“Vent-A-Hood® Limited is a shining example of the entrepreneurial spirit. In 1937, Carr P. Collins, Sr., a Dallas financier and founder of Fidelity Union Life Insurance Company, financed this family-owned company. Miles Woodall, Jr., nephew of Collins, was recruited in 1938 to manage the company. Today, his son, Miles Woodall III, is CEO of the company. The company moved to Richardson in 1961.

Vent-A-Hood® was the first manufacturer of home cooking ventilation and range hoods. The first range hoods were manufactured in a house with a dirt floor in Dallas, and then sold door-to-door. The owners would literally go out and make a sale, then return to the shop to make the hood for the customer. The primary ingredient in the success of kitchen exhaust hoods is Vent-A-Hood®’s uniquely designed, fire safe, “Magic Lung®” blower system. Throughout the years, hoods have been improved, but the original concept is central to the design and remains unequalled in the field of ventilation.

Vent-A-Hood® has developed an excellent reputation throughout the ventilation industry by offering a top quality “in stock” range hood, as well as handmade craftsmanship in their “custom” hood series. Each ventilation system manufactured by Vent-A-Hood® is individually engineered for performance in addition to style. Company longevity and product quality have given the name Vent-A-Hood® instant product recognition.

Currently housed in a modern manufacturing facility, Vent-A-Hood® employs a highly skilled workforce to achieve quality craftsmanship. A national as well as an international marketing program includes an impressive roster of distributors, many of which are second generation. Vent-A-Hood® products are sold in all fifty states, as well as Canada.

Vent-A-Hood® has experienced steady and consistent growth throughout its history and continues to have excellent growth potential. In 2005 it enlarged its manufacturing space 50% to keep up with range hood demand. The company looks forward to a bright future.”

Excerpted from Historic Richardson: An Illustrated History,
Historical Publishing Network, 2001:

So, when I talk about a “cool” kitchen, I’m thinking about the practical and the designer aspects of the range hood.  From a practical standpoint, it is important to exhaust heat, odor, and grease from the kitchen.  From a designer standpoint, the hood can be a dramatic focal point for the entire kitchen.
Take a look at the Vent-A-Hood website for some examples of amazing hoods!

Inertia….or why we procrastinate!

First let’s start with some definitions.    dictionary logo

Definition of INERTIA

1
“a : a property of matter by which it remains at rest or in uniform motion in the same straight line unless acted upon by some external force.”
( My interpretation:  I would rather live with my old kitchen just like it is, but when the dishwasher leaks on my floor, i.e.,the external  force, I must change my attitude of satisfaction with the way things are, to dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.)
2. :“indisposition to motion, exertion, or change.”  My interpretation: It’s just easier to do nothing…. or as often said, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
“indisposition to motion, exertion, or change” is a serious problem.  Inertia stops progress!  Inertia is bad for the economy!  Inertia is bad for healthy relationships!  Inertia prevents us from leading a full, productive, and happy life!   Inertia prevents us from making improvements in our surroundings (….but it’s just easier to leave things as they are)
OK….so here is my call to action:  (disclaimer–I sell kitchen appliances)  You are living with a lousy kitchen…. the dishwasher is noisy and does not clean well; there is not enough counter space; only 2 burners work on the cooktop, and the oven has not worked in months!  HEY, IT’S TIME FOR A KITCHEN MAKE-OVER!phone1 (1)Banish fear…..learn about new energy star appliances that can save you time and money…..visit a showroom where you can experience “Appliance Happiness.” Appliance Happiness

I Have No Room In My Kitchen!

Let’s start with the facts….I sell kitchen appliances at A-1 Appliance.  I usually find inspiration for my daily blog posts while talking to customers or reflecting on something that happened during the day.

I was talking with a couple today while they were looking for a new refrigerator.  As usual, I started by asking some questions about what they needed.  For example, how many in the family.  “It’s just the two of us,” they replied.  So off I went showing fairly standard size refrigerators.  It didn’t take long to realize that they were looking for a much larger capacity refrigerator!  “We want the biggest one you have,” was their comment.

I just thought this was an interesting commentary on the recent trends in kitchen appliances.  Every brand seems to be racing to develop the largest oven, refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine….you name it!  I think it is somewhat in reaction to older kitchens that had very little counter space, not enough cabinet space, and the emerging trend to cook and entertain more at home.  It is a phenomenon that has been defined as “nesting.”

So, if you are looking for BIG IDEAS for your kitchen, I invite you to come by the A-1 Appliance showroom.a1logo(1)  We have MORE of everything! ….More than what you expected.  More trained service technicians to help, more knowledgeable sales professionals, more quality appliance selections, and more solutions for your home.

Any questions?  I would be happy to help you create more room in your kitchen!     My name is Tom Burns, and I sell things that are essential to life as we know it…. phone1 (1)Connect with me on various social media sites at http://www.kimtag.com/nashvillesmart

Your Work As A “Case Study”

I recently had the great opportunity to work with an amazing Realtor in Brentwood, Tennessee.  She was about to list a home for sale, but the kitchen needed a make-over!  This is one small story in the amazing job she did to make this home a winner in the real estate market.

Here is what we accomplished in the kitchen:

The refrigerator in this kitchen presented a significant problem.  The old refrigerator was full size in a space meant for a counter-depth model.  It stuck out into the kitchen making passage between it and the island difficult.  This kitchen is in a very large home, so capacity was something we didn’t want to sacrifice. Many counter-depth refrigerators are barely over 20 cu.ft. capacity, so we found the solution in the new
Whirlpool Counter-Depth Refrigerator WRS965CIAM!           Here is

why you’ll love it… overall capacity is 25 cu.ft.!

Industry’s Largest Capacity Counter Depth Refrigerator

This model is in a league of its own. The industry’s largest capacity counter depth refrigerator3 is the only counter depth side-by-side model that offers 10 cu. ft. of interior freezer space. Now you can stock up on all your favorite frozen items, like pizzas, frozen yogurt and vegetables.

MicroEdge™ shelves

Store more items on each shelf with the MicroEdge™ shelves. They not only give you 25% more usable shelf space2, they also help contain leaks. With enough strength to hold up to 75 lbs of food, your refrigerator will be ready for whatever you bring home from the grocery store.

In-Door-Ice® Plus ice dispensing system

Get the most out of your freezer with the In-Door-Ice® Plus ice dispensing system. It creates 30% more usable space in the freezer1 and the bin tilts out or can be removed with one hand and placed on the counter to make filling glasses, pitchers and coolers easy.

Our next task was to find a dishwasher that met the needs of discriminating consumers.  Two features are top-of-mind today….Quiet and excellent cleaning power.  The WDT910SAYM wins on all counts! We chose this dishwasher to meet the needs of a family with children.  The controls are hidden….a big plus when little fingers like to push buttons!  This dishwasher has the most sanitary stainless steel tub with the powerscour option and very quiet operation.  To top it all off, it is Energy-Star qualified!  Here is

why you’ll love it…

Industry’s Most Energy Efficient Dishwashers

Use nearly 1/2 less water and energy2 without compromising performance.

Sensor Cycle

From baked-on casserole dishes to drinking glasses, the Sensor cycle has you covered. It automatically selects the right wash and dry settings for your load by using two separate sensors to measure temperature, soil level and load size once during the prewash and once during the wash cycle. It cleans tough soils 35% better1 while using just the right amount of time, energy and water, helping you have more time to do what you love.

PowerScour™ Option

The PowerScour™ option uses 40 targeted spray jets in a designated wash area to scour away baked on foods and new design features larger jets that deliver two times more coverage to clean even your large pots and pans without soaking or scrubbing. From casserole dishes to pots and pans, clean a wide variety of items simultaneously−all without using an additional drop of water

Next we updated the cooktop and ventilation system with Whirlpool’s 36″ gas cooktop, model GLS3665RS, featuring a 15,000 BTU power burner, two 12,000 BTU power burners, and two 9,000 BTU burners, all on a stainless steel top with a recessed flush grate design.  The powerful downdraft ventilation system is retractable, so there when you need it, invisible when not in use!

Our last challenge was to update the wall oven.  The previous design was a built-in microwave over a single standard bake wall oven in a 27″ cabinet. This large kitchen would not perform well with a single non-convection oven, but we were limited by the 27″ wide cabinet. So we modified the cabinet height to install a double oven with convection.  Again, Whirlpool to the rescue!  Model WOD93EC7AS  features convection in the upper oven, both ovens are self-cleaning with hidden bake elements (a huge benefit when cleaning the interior), and Whirlpool’s latest innovation, a steam clean option!  Now you can clean the oven as often as necessary, using only a small amount of water and low temperatures.  Energy efficient and safe!

why you’ll love it…

AccuBake® Temperature Management System

With the AccuBake® temperature management system, you can now achieve delicious, consistent results every time. This system surrounds food with even temperatures and uses built-in sensors to monitor oven temperature. It even turns on the correct cooking elements to ensure optimal heat and deliver consistent baking, even on multiple racks.

TimeSavor™ Ultra true convection cooking system

Whirlpool brand’s newest convection cooking system delivers exceptional results and faster baking on every rack. TimeSavor™ Ultra true convection uses a rear fan and a third 2,500-watt heating element to distribute heated air more efficiently, so the oven is filled with even heat, cutting roasting time and sealing in flavors and juices.

Rapid Preheat

The Rapid Preheat option preheats the oven 25% faster and saves time and energy. Using all of the range elements and a fan, the oven heats up more quickly and creates the ideal temperature for single rack baking. Now cutting preheat time for your next batch of chocolate chip cookies or apple crisps is easy.

Finally, we moved a countertop- friendly microwave to the coffee bar area, making it convenient to use and out of the way.

The Kitchen as “Work Center” or “Family Room”?

When you walk into your kitchen, do you see it as a work center or as a family room?  It’s an important question to ask if you are planning to build a new home or remodel an existing kitchen.  http://www.houzz.com/professionals/s/Appliance-Showroom/c/Nashville-Metro

Do you consider yourself to be a serious cook?  If so, you might want to consider  professional grade appliances, along with plenty of counter-top and cabinet storage space.  The working kitchen might contain a large commercial-style range with a seriously powerful vent hood, along with a very large built-in refrigerator and a large capacity dishwasher.  Accessories might include one or more warming drawers, an ice machine, a microwave or steam oven, plus additional under-counter refrigeration near work areas.  An awesome brand to consider would be http://www.subzero-wolf.com/

If you think of the kitchen as a gathering place for the family, it may be important to have a large island surrounded by stools, and the appliances would be appropriate for “speed cooking.”  For example, the GE Advantium would  be great for a young family preparing a lot of convenience foods.  http://www.a1appliance.com/appliances.php?url=/_CGI/SEARCH?pn=psb1201nss

A Wolf Steam Oven would be appropriate for a family with young children where the focus is on healthy eating.  Cooking more at once would be possible with convection ovens, or cooking faster would be possible with a magnetic induction cooktop.

The point I’m making is that many questions have to be asked before choosing the right appliances for the kitchen that matches your lifestyle.

If you are looking for a wide selection of appliances and guidance to the products that meet your needs, then I would invite you to contact me at A-1 Appliance in Nashville.  We create “Appliance Happiness”….because we listen to your needs!
