Flip the Switch!

Dear readers,

I need your help!  If you could simply “flip the switch” and change something in your kitchen, what would it be?

Have you taken any actions toward that goal?  Share what steps you’ve taken in the comments.  Are you searching for ideas on sites like http://www.houzz.com or http://pinterest.com?

Have you invited an interior designer, architect, or kitchen appliance specialist into your home to ask for advice?  Have you visited any showrooms in search of ideas?  What was that experience like?

If you have questions about appliances and live in the greater Nashville area, I would love to hear from you.  Getting things right in the kitchen is a collaborative effort, and I would love to be a part of your team.

Please contact me if you would like to chat.  I’ve heard many people say, “I’m so confused I don’t even know what questions to ask.”  Actually that’s a great place to start!  Let me ask you some questions to help you get focused.  This discovery stage can be quite interesting and fun.

It all boils down to the recipe!

I’m not a food blogger….I sell kitchen appliances, so in a round about way, recipes are very important to me!  As I was thinking about the common definition of “recipe,” it occurred to me that everything ultimately boils down to the recipe (no pun intended, but the analogy is awesome isn’t it?)

Every product or service is built with step by step instructions (ingredients).  The raw materials have to be mixed or added at the appropriate time to achieve the desired outcome (dish).  If the ingredients are good, the final product, or service, is good.   A famous chef (CEO, Manager, Designer, Inventor) produces a much sought-after product.

Let’s talk about the ingredients from our pantry (factory).  Again, we are back to raw materials, often harvested from many sources.  The great chef has a well trained staff to purchase the raw materials in the correct quantities and at the right time, so that other members of the team can cook (build), and serve (deliver) to the consumer….(there you go…another food analogy–we “consume” food, but we are consumers of products and services too).  As consumers, we don’t want meals (products or services) with poor ingredients made with a badly written recipe!

So, let’s travel down the food chain and look closely at the recipe.  If you visit the showroom of A-1 Appliance in Nashville, TN you will see The Living Kitchen, featuring Sub-Zero and Wolf Appliances.logo-subzero-onlogo-wolf-on  This “recipe” originated in Madison, Wisconsin at the Sub-Zero and Wolf factories.  They follow a precise recipe with the finest ingredients, tasted throughout production to be sure it is perfect for consumption, and finally displayed with care in fine showrooms such as ours at A-1 Appliance.a1logo(1)

So, if you are looking for the perfect recipe for your kitchen, I personally invite you to visit our kitchen.  We will help you mix the perfect ingredients to amaze and delight your family!

A-1 Appliance has an awesome kitchen staff…..a well-educated sales staff preparing daily for your visit, supported by an awesome team of delivery, installation, and service technicians to meet your every need.

From our kitchen to yours…a perfect meal every time! (don’t you love the analogy?)

The Kitchen as “Work Center” or “Family Room”?

When you walk into your kitchen, do you see it as a work center or as a family room?  It’s an important question to ask if you are planning to build a new home or remodel an existing kitchen.  http://www.houzz.com/professionals/s/Appliance-Showroom/c/Nashville-Metro

Do you consider yourself to be a serious cook?  If so, you might want to consider  professional grade appliances, along with plenty of counter-top and cabinet storage space.  The working kitchen might contain a large commercial-style range with a seriously powerful vent hood, along with a very large built-in refrigerator and a large capacity dishwasher.  Accessories might include one or more warming drawers, an ice machine, a microwave or steam oven, plus additional under-counter refrigeration near work areas.  An awesome brand to consider would be http://www.subzero-wolf.com/

If you think of the kitchen as a gathering place for the family, it may be important to have a large island surrounded by stools, and the appliances would be appropriate for “speed cooking.”  For example, the GE Advantium would  be great for a young family preparing a lot of convenience foods.  http://www.a1appliance.com/appliances.php?url=/_CGI/SEARCH?pn=psb1201nss

A Wolf Steam Oven would be appropriate for a family with young children where the focus is on healthy eating.  Cooking more at once would be possible with convection ovens, or cooking faster would be possible with a magnetic induction cooktop.

The point I’m making is that many questions have to be asked before choosing the right appliances for the kitchen that matches your lifestyle.

If you are looking for a wide selection of appliances and guidance to the products that meet your needs, then I would invite you to contact me at A-1 Appliance in Nashville.  We create “Appliance Happiness”….because we listen to your needs!

Your Kitchen Could Be Hazardous To Your Health!

Air pollution is in the news daily.  We are all concerned about greenhouse gases, smog, pollution from cars and factories, and global warming.  But have you stopped to think about the indoor air quality in your kitchen?  The air in your own home could be hazardous to your health!

Here are some reasons you should be concerned about the ventilation system in your kitchen:

  1. A vented hood above your range or cooktop will remove hazardous air pollutants that come from cooking….smoke, grease, and steam produced by the food, plus carbon monoxide if you cook with gas.
  2. A vented hood will remove excess heat, making the cooking process much more pleasant, plus it will protect your family from eye, nose, and throat irritation and bad cooking odors.
  3. A vented hood will remove grease and moisture from the kitchen which helps prevent the growth of bacteria and mold!  This is particularly important for allergy sufferers and anyone with lung problems.
  4. Are you thinking of selling your home?  Most real estate agents will tell you that the kitchen makes or breaks the sale of the home.  Updated kitchens add close to 80% of the cost of the project to the value of the home and usually results in faster sale of the home.

If you have questions about the appropriate ventilation system for your home, stop by A-1 Appliance in Nashville and let me guide you through the selection process.   You can find us at http://www.a1appliance.com

What is a BTU?

If you like to cook, no doubt you have heard the term “BTU” or British Thermal Unit.  So why is it important to know about BTU’s when cooking with gas?  Without getting technical, it has to do with the amount of heat produced by the burner.  A very high BTU, say 18,000 BTU’s, will boil water very fast!

Likewise, you’ve seen the term “simmer” in many recipes.  To simmer means to cook for a period of time just under the boiling point.  This is often described in terms of BTU’s…say anywhere from 300 to 1000 BTU’s.  Gas appliance manufacturers achieve a simmer in various ways.  The important point to remember is that both extremes are important in cooking.  You can learn more about the benefits of cooking with gas at http://www.piedmontng.com/yourhome/savemoneyandenergy/energysavingtools/energysavingtools.aspx

If you would like to know more about cooking with gas, stop by the A-1 Appliance showroom and I can show you many examples of gas cooktops and ranges, and the various benefits of each.  We are located at 5410 Harding Pk., Nashville, TN or visit us at http://www.a1appliance.com

Vitamins, Minerals, and Rest

A day in the life of the average worker….. (insert your life here)

Would you agree that most of us live a pretty unhealthy life?  A breakfast of doughnuts and coffee leads to jitters and mid-morning hunger or headaches.  Break-time means more coffee and a candy bar.  Lunch is all about convenience!        More sugar, salt, and fat….plus a calorie count higher than consumed by most athletes…is the average fast-food lunch.  And forget about drinking enough water!

Do you feel exhausted by mid-afternoon?  So, I’m sure most of you rush from work to the nearest gym for a good work-out …. or do you visit the gym before work….NOT!  Instead, we stay up too late watching TV and eating more unhealthy food, go to bed with indigestion and sleep poorly, and wake up feeling horrible.  We leave for work too late, drive too fast while eating that doughnut or breakfast drive-thru food, all the while risking our lives and the lives of others sharing the road.  Seriously, is this a good plan?

I’m not trying to make everyone feel guilty about their lifestyle, but hoping that my comments will make you stop and think about what you can do to lead a healthier lifestyle!  Otherwise the future looks pretty grim….diabetes, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.

Here are some healthy breakfast ideas from the Mayo Clinic:  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/food-and-nutrition/NU00197

How much water should you drink?  Again, from the Mayo Clinic:  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/water/NU00283

And how about cooking at home for a change.  When you cook, you can be in control of fat, salt, and sugar content.

If you would like help to make your kitchen “home-cooking” friendly, some on down to A-1 Appliance and see me.  I’ll show you the right equipment to make cooking easier, quicker, and healthier for your family.  http://www.a1appliance.com

What’s Inside?

I was reading an observation this morning about what we see as we pass most businesses and it triggered today’s post.  Think about your own experiences.  As you walk down a busy street, what do you observe?  You may pass a restaurant with tables on a street side patio or see a menu board standing in front of the entry.  Each view gives you a different sense of what this restaurant is all about.  Continuing down the street, you may pass a bank with revolving glass doors and a large sign on the top of the building….very little information here!  Next on the block is a retail store.  Most have very large display windows showing you what to expect if you come in.  Finally you pass a street vendor selling lunch.  You can see the preparation and smell the food.  You can observe others enjoying the food, and you can see the menu with prices posted….LOTS of information here!  I think I might like to stop here and have lunch!

Now shift to the virtual world of the internet or a particular website.  The experience can be very similar.  You might begin with a google search and simply find a listing of possible sites to visit.  As you continue, you may browse a particular site…..nothing much to see here…meh…on to the next virtual storefront.  Suddenly you come upon bright colors, movement, links to reviews, and sale signs with lots of pictures.  That’s pretty inviting….I think I’ll go in here, since I have a pretty good idea of what I will find inside.  I might want to buy what I’m looking for here!

So I want to invite you to my storefront.  We have a lot going on at A-1 Appliance!  You can always find me near the big sign…. (usually parked on the ground)

When you come inside, you might find me cooking!

We have amazing kitchen displays throughout the showroom!

Cooking is an Art!

I found this quote recently.  If you love a great kitchen and good food, you’ll love it too!

Cooking is an art and patience a virtue… Careful shopping, fresh ingredients and an unhurried approach are nearly all you need. There is one more thing – love. Love for food and love for those you invite to your table. With a combination of these things you can be an artist – not perhaps in the representational style of a Dutch master, but rather more like Gauguin, the naïve, or Van Gogh, the impressionist. Plates or pictures of sunshine taste of happiness and love.”
~ Keith Floyd – a British chef and television personality who hosted numerous cooking shows for the BBC
