Life in a Fishbowl

In anticipation of Earth Day tomorrow I wanted to share a brief thought with you on the subject,  in the hope that a mental image will convey the importance of keeping our fragile planet clean.

Picture in  your mind a goldfish bowl.  It has been neglected and the water has become polluted.  Debris is floating on the surface, along with a dead fish.  Algae has grown on the glass, making it hard to see through the water.  The smell is bad, and there is nothing to do but throw it out.

The image is powerful and poignant.  It is a microscopic version of our planet.  We fail to see the tragedy in the fish bowl before it is too late, just as we are failing to see the tragedy unfolding all over the earth.

Most of you reading this live in areas that are clear enough that there is no sense of imminent danger.  The sky is blue on a sunny day, the air smells fresh, and a gentle wind blows.  But occasionally, and unfortunately too often, there is an air quality alert.  “Stay indoors if you have certain health conditions.”  Some of you reading this may live in industrial areas or large metropolitan areas where smog has become a frequent problem.  For other parts of the world, particularly China and India, the pollution is overwhelming and people are dying, just like the fish in the goldfish bowl.

We are trapped in our own filth and we refuse to see the consequences of our own actions!

It is my hope that the intense focus of the media on global warming, and the celebration  (if you can call it a celebration) of Earth Day, will not be ignored.  Open your eyes, if you can bear the sting, and see the building danger.  It won’t be corrected by governments around the world or the decisions of major corporations, it will be corrected one person at a time.  The decisions you make today concerning water and energy conservation will have far-reaching consequences.  If you believe “someone else” will take care of it, you are sadly mistaken!

Every day I try to make a difference, one home at a time.  I sell Energy Star appliances, using far less energy that before, along with washing machines and dishwashers that use a fraction of the water used in previous years.  I drive a smart car that is far more fuel efficient than my previous SUV, and the vast majority of the parts it is made of are recyclable.  But there is more that each one of us can do, step by step, to reduce the pollution of our world.

Will you start today?  Come and see me at A-1 Appliance where I can show you some great solutions for your home.  I’m anxious to help!NachoA-1_2

Searching for Kitchen Ideas

Where do you go for ideas to create the perfect kitchen?  Do you find Pinterest helpful?  How about Houzz?  Do you search specific brand websites, or do you search for local dealers where you can see and touch the products?  Do you ask your friends or find ideas in magazines?

Once you have the perfect kitchen in mind, how do you proceed to create it?  Do you hire an interior designer or an architect.  Do you want to work with a general contractor or do you search for a local remodeling company?

What advice do you value the most?  Do you search Consumer Reports or go shopping and hope for good advice from local dealers?

How do you put it all together?  Does a tabbed binder help?  So many decisions…..wall color, flooring, window treatments, countertop material and color, cabinet styles and hardware, lighting, backsplash, appliances and plumbing, an island with seating or a prep area, ventilation, and on and on….

Has designing your kitchen been a great experience or a total disaster?  What advice can you share that might help others design the perfect kitchen?

My name is Tom Burns, Sales Professional at A-1 Appliance in Nashville, TN.tom  I work with one critical component of the kitchen design process….the appliances.  Someone called me today and asked when they should order the appliances and should they be installed before the countertops or after….I could sense that they were paralyzed by the logistics of it all.  To simplify it, my answer was that the appliances are the first decision and the last installation.

Everything hinges on the appliance selection!  The architect can’t draw the kitchen without this decision.  The cabinets can’t be designed and built until dimensions are determined.  Will the range be the focal point of the kitchen, or is it important to integrate the appliances into the cabinetry to make everything look like furniture?  When everything is complete….the painting is finished, the cabinets and countertops have been installed, and the plumber and electrician have finished their work, it’s time for the final touch….the appliance installation!

Your masterpiece is almost complete.  But have you selected a dealer with an expert delivery and installation team?  Can they install everything without damaging your new floor?

Yes!  It can be done!  When you think of appliances in the Greater Nashville area, think of A-1 Appliance.a1logo(1)  A great starting point in your research should be our website, www.a1appliance.com.  You can also find a huge database of ideas on our blog, www.a1applianceideas.com.  And when you are ready to see the appliances in person, we invite you to visit our showroom. phone1 (1)A-1 Appliance offers products in all price ranges, styles, and colors.  Come on in and let me help  you sort through all of the choices!

Selling Your Home? 10 Tips!

Some great advice here:  http://www.bankrate.com/finance/real-estate/10-ways-to-turn-off-a-homebuyer-1.aspx

I want to draw your attention to #3 in particular!

3. Old fixtures

“Want buyers to roll their eyes? Leave old fixtures on your doors and cabinets.

“You need to change out old fixtures in your house,” Goldwasser says. “New cabinet hardware and doorknobs will probably cost all of $400 or $500, but it makes a huge difference.”

The same holds true for dated ceiling fans, light fixtures and kitchen appliances.

“Homes that have old fans, lights, ovens, microwaves, ranges and dishwashers can really turn a buyer off,” says Goldwasser. “Sellers will say, ‘Oh, the buyers can take care of that.’ Well, yes they can, but it’s going to impede you from getting the highest price possible for your home.”

If you need help getting your kitchen ready to sell, sell, sell your home, you need to contact me now!phone1 (1)

or e-mail tburns@a1appliance.com  You won’t get “generalized” information from me!  Your home is in competition with other homes for sale in your neighborhood–I’ll help you find appliances that are right for your potential buyer!

I’ve been part of the professional sales team at A-1 Appliance for 15+ years and can offer you expert advice, backed up by an incredible installation and delivery team and an in-house service department to get your kitchen ready for sale!

“Oh No!”…..

We all hate hearing those words coming from the kitchen, right?  Nothing good ever comes from it!

Our response is….. “What happened?”

I can share quite a list with you from personal experience, and I’m sure you can too!

I think I’ve heard just about all of them.  You see, I am an appliance salesman in Belle Meade, a suburb of Nashville, TN (recently voted as the NUMBER ONE best place to retire rich: http://www.forbes.com/pictures/mjf45hdfl/belle-meade-tennessee/  Here are a few of the most painful I’ve heard:

  1. A young couple returning from vacation turned into their driveway to discover water running out of the garage door.  It turns out that an appliance started leaking upstairs the day after they left for vacation.  A year later they are still dealing with the insurance company and major repairs.
  2. One of my favorites comes from a family who had just moved into a new split-level home, newly landscaped.  After closing on the new home and moving in, they left for a few days to finalize the sale of their old home.  It turns out that the movers had tracked grass seed on to the new carpet.  While they were gone, the washing machine hose had burst on the upper level, saturating the new carpet on the lower level.  They returned to find grass growing in their new living room!
  3. Too bad O rings break.  These evil little things can cause a slow leak. One of my customers suffered major damage when they discovered that their dishwasher had been slowly dripping water for a long time.  When the wood floor showed signs of buckling in front of the dishwasher, further inspection showed rotted flooring underneath, damage to the wall and adjoining cabinets, and damage to the room below.  OUCH!
  4. “I’ll never have another ice maker in my refrigerator!”  I heard that recently when a water supply line burst and flooded half of the house.  No simple repair here.  Wood floors had to be replaced throughout the house!
  5. Just a few days ago, someone brought in an electric coil burner from their range.  It had erupted into flame and burned in half while they were eating breakfast.  Good thing they were home to turn off the power!
  6. Can you imagine coming home from vacation and discovering that the power had been off for several days?  Open the refrigerator for a very unpleasant experience.  You can never get rid of the smell of rotten food!

So each of these things I have described are painful to deal with.  These are things you can’t anticipate, but must deal with immediately.  A natural companion to the pain is the frustration of not being able to fix the problem quickly.

Buying a new major appliance or making repairs to your damaged home is not always a quick process.  It can be mentally and physically exhausting to shop through the many available choices and price points.

“Am I making the right choice?”  “Should we look at other brands?”  “Am I getting the best deal?”  “When will my kitchen be back to normal???”

I hope these things never happen to you, but if you are in Nashville and find yourself in any of these unpleasant situations, I hope you will call me at A-1 Appliance.  I’ll do my best to speed up your recovery!  If you are far away, you still might find helpful advice on our website, blog, facebook, or twitter pages.phone1 (1)

Baked, Boiled, or Fried….Your Favorite Food?

Today’s post is short and sweet….after all it is Friday night!  Do you have all the food ready for tomorrow’s NCAA Final Four event?

http://www.ncaa.com/final-four#!event_news

Food and Sports ….a natural combination!  As you prepare for the big event tomorrow, take a look at your kitchen.  Does it need a major make-over?  Would it win the championship or is it a total loser?

If your kitchen could use a little help, stop by and see me after the games are over!  If the pizza was burnt and the beer was warm, it might be time for some new appliances.  I can help!

My name is Tom Burns, and I sell things essential to life as we know it!  (you know…the microwave, the refrigerator, the dishwasher!)  Don’t be fooled by the big, bold ads in the Sunday paper shouting about the lowest price….there is a lot to learn before you  purchase an appliance that should last for many years. A bad choice could be the worst mistake you ever  made…(you sure don’t want to hear about that for the next several years, do you?)  Let the experts at A-1 Appliance guide you to a smart decision that’s right for you and fits your budget.

See you after the game!  http://www.a1appliance.com/flyers.html

My Washing Machine Stinks!

Washing machine odor is such a common problem, I think lots of people will read this post.  There are probably as many answers as there are owners of front-loading washers!  But  here is a website that I highly recommend for answers to this problem as well as a host of other common household issues….One Good Thing By Jillie!  Here is her suggestion:

http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2012/02/how-to-fix-smelly-washing-machine.html

I have been a member of the sales team at A-1 Appliance for over 15 years, so I have talked with a lot of people about washing machines.  I have to say that in spite of many comments about smelly washers, the benefits of a front-loading washer far outweigh any maintenance issues….not the least of which is saving an enormous amount of money on water, energy, and detergent!  (and we have not even factored in the savings from clothes that last longer due to a more gentle wash).

If you are curious about high-efficiency washers, front-loading or top-loading, I hope you will visit A-1 Appliance for answers to your questions.  I guarantee, there is a washing machine that is right for YOU!  Let us help you select the right one!phone1 (1)
