Cook like a Pro

People often ask what the benefits of dual fuel ranges are, so we thought we’d explain. Dual fuel ranges use gas flames on the cooktop and electric coils in the oven. Learn More.Making Life Easier

Maytag, which was created by Frederick Louis Maytag and three partners, is known for designing dependable products that make life easier. When they built their first washer in 1907, they had no idea that Maytag would become one of the leading appliance brands in the U.S. Learn More.

Quick Ways to Remove the Toughest Stains

Do you dread removing stains from your clothes as much as I do? Sometimes it’s just so frustrating because it seems like no matter what you do, the stain just won’t come out. With this in mind, I thought I’d give you some tips that may help you with some of your toughest stains.Tea and coffee stains are among the hardest to remove. One tip for removing fresh tea or coffee stains is to pour boiling water over the stain until it’s gone. Another option is to soak the stain with a mix of borax and water and then launder the item. If it’s an old stain, it may be a little tougher to remove, so you can make a paste using borax and water and leave it on the stain for 15 minutes before throwing it in the washer. If you have children, you’re probably used to grass stains. An easy tip for removing these stains is to pat the area with rubbing alcohol or diluted hydrogen peroxide before laundering it. If you don’t have those items handy, you can apply dishwashing detergent on the stain and let it sit for ten minutes before washing it.Ink stains are some of the toughest stains to remove as well. Believe it or not, hairspray is a great tool for removing ink stains from clothing. All you have to do is spray it onto the stained area allowing it to penetrate the fabric, and then sit for a few minutes. Afterward, throw it in the washer like usual.

Removing stains in no fun, but at least you’ve got some quick remedies for removing them. Now you’ll be able to remove those pesky stains in no time.

Patriot Day

September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City: V...

Image via Wikipedia

In the United StatesPatriot Day occurs on September 11 of each year, designated in memory of the 2,977 killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. Most Americans who were alive during the events refer to the day as “Nine-Eleven (9/11)”, “September Eleventh“, or some variation thereof. Initially, the day was called the Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001.

U.S. House of Representatives Joint Resolution 71 was approved by a vote of 407–0 on October 25, 2001. It requested that the Presidentdesignate September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day”. President George W. Bush signed the resolution into law on December 18, 2001 (asPublic Law 107-89[1]). It is a discretionary day of remembrance. On September 4, 2002, President Bush used his authority created by the resolution and proclaimed September 11, 2002 as Patriot Day.

On this day, the President directs that the American flag be flown at half-staff at individual American homes, at the White House, and on allU.S. government buildings and establishments, home and abroad. The President also asks Americans to observe a moment of silencebeginning at 8:46 A.M. (Eastern Daylight Time), the time the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

History

A bill to make September 11 a mourning day was introduced in the U.S. House on October 25, 2001, by Republican Vito Fossella (R-NY) with 22 co-sponsors, among them eleven Democrats and eleven Republicans.[citation needed] It passed the House by a vote of 407–0, with 25 members not voting,[2] and passed the Senate unanimously on November 30. It was signed by President Bush, without ceremony, on December 18 as Public Law No. 107-89.

Its original co-sponsors in the House were:

A 9/11 Story

Image representing Meetup as depicted in Crunc...

Image via CrunchBase

I have really struggled with appropriate topics for blog posts this weekend, given the significance of the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  I received this e-mail this morning and thought it was worth re-posting.  I am a huge fan of meetup.com and urge everyone to make new friends through this amazing website.  You’ll understand when you read the following e-mail:

I don’t write to our whole community often, but this week is
special because it’s the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and many
people don’t know that Meetup is a 9/11 baby.

Let me tell you the Meetup story. I was living a couple miles
from the Twin Towers, and I was the kind of person who thought
local community doesn’t matter much if we’ve got the internet
and tv. The only time I thought about my neighbors was when I
hoped they wouldn’t bother me.

When the towers fell, I found myself talking to more neighbors
in the days after 9/11 than ever before. People said hello to
neighbors (next-door and across the city) who they’d normally
ignore. People were looking after each other, helping each
other, and meeting up with each other. You know, being
neighborly.

A lot of people were thinking that maybe 9/11 could bring
people together in a lasting way. So the idea for Meetup was
born: Could we use the internet to get off the internet — and
grow local communities?

We didn’t know if it would work. Most people thought it was a
crazy idea — especially because terrorism is designed to make
people distrust one another.

A small team came together, and we launched Meetup 9 months
after 9/11.

Today, almost 10 years and 10 million Meetuppers later, it’s
working. Every day, thousands of Meetups happen. Moms Meetups,
Small Business Meetups, Fitness Meetups… a wild variety of
100,000 Meetup Groups with not much in common — except one
thing.

Every Meetup starts with people simply saying hello to
neighbors. And what often happens next is still amazing to me.
They grow businesses and bands together, they teach and
motivate each other, they babysit each other’s kids and find
other ways to work together. They have fun and find solace
together. They make friends and form powerful community. It’s
powerful stuff.

It’s a wonderful revolution in local community, and it’s thanks
to everyone who shows up.

Meetups aren’t about 9/11, but they may not be happening if it
weren’t for 9/11.

9/11 didn’t make us too scared to go outside or talk to
strangers. 9/11 didn’t rip us apart. No, we’re building new
community together!!!!

The towers fell, but we rise up. And we’re just getting started
with these Meetups.

I hope you will consider joining some of the amazing meetup groups in Nashville.  I have met some amazing people, made great business connections, and found new friends.

Healthy Cooking At Home

“I love good food, but I’m sure not much of a cook.”  and, “I wish my kids would eat better, but I just don’t have time to cook!”

I’ve heard these comments, and others like them, many times over the years at A-1 Appliance.  When I do, I always ask, “Have you heard of the GE Advantium?”  I’m always surprised when they say “no.”

” It’s a miracle appliance,” I tell them.  “I’ve owned one for many years.  Come on, let me demonstrate what I’m talking about.”

Now I know you’re busy right now, so let me invite you to visit the GE Advantium website to get you excited about the possibilities for your kitchen, and then invite you to come by A-1 Appliance for a proper demonstration.  You won’t believe how easy this appliance is to use!

Here is the website:

While you’re still excited, check out the Advantium recipes here:

Planning the Perfect Dinner Party

Once you have all these innovative appliances we’ve mentioned, you’re probably going to want to have a dinner party, so you can use them. I thought I would give you a few tips to help you plan the perfect party.

The first thing you’ll need to do is invite your guests. You can either call your guests, or send out printed cards or email invitations. We all have busy schedules, so it’s important to give at least two weeks notice when inviting your guests; that way you’ll have plenty of time to plan the party. Don’t forget to ask for an RSVP request.

Next, you’ll need to plan the menu. You’ll want to consider items that complement each other, not only in taste, but also add a variety of colors to your plate. You also need to take into account food restrictions, such as allergies; low carb or low fat diets; or vegan or vegetarian lifestyles. Usually, just having extra veggies will cater to low carb and vegetarian needs without having to change your entire menu. Choosing make-ahead appetizers and sides will make your life much easier.

Setting the mood to a nice dinner party is important. You need to choose the right music; something that is relaxing and mellow will create an inviting atmosphere. Make sure you don’t play it too loud; it needs to be in the background, so your guests can enjoy their conversations without yelling over music. Candles or flowers are great choices for a centerpiece. Candles are simple, but elegant. If you choose candles, make sure you choose unscented ones for the dining table; you don’t want the scent of candles competing with the food. Flowers add a splash of color and a hint of beauty to your dining table. You can either buy a bouquet that has already been arranged for you or pick flowers from your own garden. Either way, they will add elegance to your table.

Planning a dinner party can be a lot of work, but it can also be a lot of fun. The most important thing to remember is to enjoy the time you get to spend with your guests.

And if you really do plan a party like this, please…remember to invite that certain girl in a certain newsletter that helped you so much!

Puppies

The dogs

Image via Wikipedia

Why can’t we all be more like puppies?  To a puppy, there are no strangers….everyone gets a wagging tail.  Everything is exciting, everything has the potential to become a toy, and everything must be explored!  And riding in the car is AWESOME!

But when we get older, we tend to forget these childlike tendencies.  We become suspicious of strangers.  We lose our sense of adventure and playfulness. ….and a commute in the car is TORTURE!

What can you do today to be more like a puppy?  Try it…..i’m sure it’s a LOT MORE FUN!

By the way, I hope you can stop by A-1 Appliance.  We are a fun group of people, and puppies are welcome!

Asking questions

Image via Wikipedia

Why don’t adults ask questions?  Next time you are around children, notice that all they do is ask questions, and quite often it is “why?”.  They don’t accept “because I said so” as an answer….so why do you?

I’m reading a great book right now by Christopher Phillips called Socrates Cafe.  I highly recommend it.  It is a book about asking questions. I found it to be a very thought-provoking book.  Pick up a copy at your local library.

If you have questions about appliances, I hope you will ask me.  I’ll do my best to help you save money and find what you need.  Visit our website for more informaton :  www.a1appliance.com
